Will Porn Tip The Scale In Favor Of The PS4?

Nov 20, 13 Will Porn Tip The Scale In Favor Of The PS4?

Let the console wars begin – or rather make that let the console wars continue. The latest battle for video games has begun as Sony’s PlayStation 4 video game console arrived in stores last Friday, and according to numbers released by the company sold one million units in the United States in the first 24 hours.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc, via a statement. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

A million units? Really, jolly that’s just grand (Note to readers: that’s sarcasm).

Sony is hyping what was in essence was a foregone conclusion, especially since those million units do include pre-orders. It would have been bigger news if Sony didn’t reach a million units in the first 24 hours. Truth is that Microsoft will also likely reach a million units sold on this Friday when the Xbox One is released.

Getting the early adopters with a new video game console is easy. It is going to be reaching the next 60 million people that is the hard part.

However, on Monday, Sony’s PlayStation One might have gotten a secret weapon – and it isn’t clear if they were expecting it.

Via a press release, Pornhub.com announced that it would “be supporting the PS4 on the system’s browsing capabilities” and has the “minds of gamers looking to get a little more ‘hands-on’ fun in their spare time.”

Amusing double entendre aside this is actually significant news – to a point. It isn’t clear what advantage the PS4’s system browsing really means or offers, nor why Pornhub.com wouldn’t work with the Xbox One. However, the fact that the pornography industry is looking into this is worth noting. –yes, there is a porn industry and they even have an annual trade show in Las Vegas, AVN.  This reporter, who did cover it for a story, can say it is truly the least sexy thing he’s ever seen.

But I can also add that porn can make a difference for a platform.

Sony’s Betamax technology was considered superior to VHS – it offered a slightly better picture – but rumors suggest that porn killed. While it is hard to clear this one up the fact is that by the time porn starting going to home video VHS was likely already going to win anyway. Porn likely helped. In many ways porn helped push the home video business, but VHS likely built a porn empire.

It is also a fact that porn likely made DVD a smash hit, at least a bit faster – no pun intended btw. The higher resolution, the ability to skip scenes, go to a scene, etc. all reportedly were features that the porn industry really embraced.

So will porn help the PS4?

Well, consider that Sony didn’t really embrace porn when it rolled out Blu-ray. In fact the porn industry actually pushed the rival HD-DVD format as noted by stories by Arstechnica from 2007.  A MacWorld story from a year earlier even suggested “Porn industry may be decider in Blu-ray, HD-DVD battle” and Daily Tech noted in 2008 that despite Hollywood pulling the plug on HD-DVD, the porn industry was still supporting it.

The power of porn is thus not to be overstated. Porn may have helped make DVD, but the Internet killed porn on DVD.

This brings us back to the fact that Pornhub.com is a website. But really, it is the web. People can use a smartphone to see websites. Porn may have played a role in making home video and making DVD, but with the video game consoles it won’t have an impact at all.
