What A Rush: 2015 Corvette Z06
Even if you are not a Chevy fan, this one has got to spark at least an interest. It’s the all-new, redesigned muscle car from Chevrolet, the 2015 Corvette Z06, and Top Speed has the run down.
Chevy announced the Z06 at the 2014 Detroit Auto show on January 13. The new model will acquire an aggressive facelift, a more powerful engine, a new high performance Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors and a sport suspension.
One hour after the announcement, images of the Z06 began to surface on the Internet.
During a press conference, GM announced the new 6.2-L supercharged V-8 engine named the LT4, will produce more than 625 hp and 635 lb-ft of torque. The frame will be constructed out of all aluminum and is 60 percent stiffer than last year’s frame. It will have standard a carbon-fiber removable top with two available transmissions, as well as a standard seven-speed manual with rev matching or an optional eight-speed automatic operated by paddles on the steering wheel.
The differential will be a smart electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) that shifts the torque according to the factors of vehicle speed, steering and throttle position. This will improve handling, balance and traction.
GM claims it will be the, “most track-capable Corvette ever, designed to deliver supercar levels of performance through unique powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic features.”
On January 6, 2014 GM announced it would stream the debut of the 2015 Corvette Z06 online starting at 9:30 am EST and the press conference would start at 10 am EST on January 13, 2014. The live stream can be seen here.
The first update to the new Z06 started with all new wider Michelin performance tires and all other changes stemmed from there. The front and rear fenders were then widened to accommodate the wider lightweight spin-cast aluminum wheels and pavement-grabbing rubber. The taillights were set three inches further apart to fit better into the wider stance.
With the extra performance, more down force would be needed, so a front splitter was added that extends around the wheel openings, a carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent and a new rear spoiler.
Customers will be able to upgrade the Z06 with a carbon-fiber aero package including the front splitter with aviation-style winglets, carbon-fiber rocker panels and a larger rear spoiler with a fixed wickerbill to increase down force. Another option available is the “Z07” package with larger front winglets and an adjustable see-through center on the rear spoiler.
The interior upgrades include a choice of GT or Competition seats made from magnesium for greater strength and less weight. The interior materials include Napa leather, aluminum, carbon fiber and micro-suede and will be offered with a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
