For this week’s Green Minute, The Green Register will be running a series of brief videos by the Alliance to Save Energy which provide  hard-to-find answers to some eco-friendly energy efficiency questions. Today’s Green Minute – Living Efficiently: Pet Owners.

According to the Alliance to Save Energy your pets do not have to be a source of energy “inefficiency.”

For example, when you are away from work during the day, lower your thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer. Pets do not need artificial lights, they actually thrive on nature’s schedule, so turn off all the lights in your home before you leave.

Along with keeping it natural, don’t leave the television on to entertain your pet. Additional pet toys will do the trick. And finally, if you have a pet door, make sure it is efficient and does not let out the cool or heat from your home.

Taking care of your household pet does not have to cost you extra money during the day, and in fact, according to the Alliance to Save Energy, these pet-friendly tips can help you save energy and become more efficient.
