May is the month students across America are graduating and moving out of dorms and student housing. For today’s Green Minute, we provide some helpful tips on how to “move-out” on campus in an eco-friendly way.

Packing

Eco-friendly tip: Instead of buying boxes, start collecting them from local businesses. When packing, instead of purchasing extra materials for protecting breakables, utilize clothing or repurpose newspaper and magazines by crumpling them up to keep things intact.

Textbooks

Eco-friendly tip: Most textbooks can be sold back to distributors or to students or bookstores needing them the following year. Don’t discount the fact that even if they are being discontinued at your school the subject may be common enough that schools in nearby colleges and universities may need them.

Furniture

Eco-friendly tip: Storing furniture along with other belongings that may be needed the following year is one option. Another is selling items via social media sites or listing them as free on websites such as craigslist or freecycle. Other options – hold a collective yard sale, or donate items to Goodwill.

Cleaners

Eco-friendly tips: Use eco-friendly cleaners or research how to make your own from common substances like baking soda and vinegar. Just remember to keep the area well ventilated as even green cleaning supplies can cause some intoxicating fumes. Visit the Environmental Working Group’s 2012 Healthy Cleaner Guide.
