The Gaudier, The Better
If you are looking for a reason to put on the gaudy clothes, look no further. Today is Wear Something Gaudy Day, according to Holiday Insights. Every day, most of us dress, well, bland. We wear our suits or calm business casual dress. Of course, some of us don’t. Some of us have a style that defies the traditional suit and tie or heels and dress. But on October 17, we all can throw caution to the wind (forgive the cliché) and just dress as fun and gaudy as possible.
Holiday Insights provides the origins of this fun-filled day: “The roots of this day go back to the hit 1970′s television comedy show Three’s Company.” Larry Dallas (played by Richard Kline), one of the characters on the show, declared a Wear Something Gaudy Day.” From this tv show comes the joys of dressing flamboyantly, of stepping out of our normal and into the gaudy fun. Oh yes, today we can all be one hot mess!
That is, providing we understand just how to dress gaudy.
So what exactly does gaudy mean? As Merriam-Webster online defines gaudy means “too bright and heavily decorated; very large or impressive; ostentatiously or tastelessly ornamented; marked by extravagance or sometimes tasteless showiness.” Gaudy is different for each of us. For some, gaudy means bright, neon colors. Others might see gaudy as feather boas, costume jewelry, and sparkly outfits. Some, still, might think that gaudy means princess gowns, a knight’s gear, or some other extravagant costume-like attire.
Regardless, gaudy means fun. Sure, if we dress gaudy every day, then the nuance and “ah-ha” factors disappear. We risk becoming desensitized. But…if we reserve dressing so extremely, so brightly, so tastelessly, for special occasions like Wear Something Gaudy Day, then we all enjoy the flaunting of gaudy.
A few years ago, Examiner.com explained just how to get your gaud on by listing ways to celebration Wear Something Gaudy Day:
- Invite your BFF’s over and clean out your closet! Try on those out-of-style clothes for old times’ sake, have a little wine and a lotta laughs!
- Have a Wine Tasting and Gaudy Day party.
- Wear something gaudy to work – just make sure to check with the boss first!
- If wearing something really wild to work just isn’t appropriate, at last you can wear mismatched socks and shoes, right?
- Don’t forget the flashy, ginormous fake jewels and over-the-top makeup!
- If you are an educator, why not take a look back at the fashion crazes over the years?
I must say that each of these suggestions sounds simply fabulous. And isn’t that what today is all about—indulging in the fab! We spend so much of our lives doing what we must, fulfilling our responsibilities. Today, though, we can sit back and just enjoy. We can be fun with just a little bit of glitz, glam, and gaudy. We can harken back to our youthful days of playing dress up with Mom’s or Grandma’s or just the Dress-Up Chest’s clothes. We can remember sitting in front of a mirror with Mom’s make-up pretending to put it on but in reality smearing it all over our faces. We can pick up the perfume and spritz it all around us until we have a cloud of it following us. We can just have fun.
So, at some point today, put on what makes you feel gaudy and indulge!
