From The Weather Desk: So what is ENSO and how does it impact the climate of our earth? First ENSO is a term used to describe the interaction between El-Nino and La-Nina which are weather cycles that occur in the Pacific Ocean but have global impacts. El-Nino Southern Oscillation is the name of the cycle which is abbreviated by the words (ENSO).
Climate Blog Entry #1: We are going to adventure in and see how these last cycles impacted the region of Dallas Texas.
First we will look at how the El-Nino event of 2009-2010 impacted the Dallas Metro Area. It helped the temperatures for the time period of July 2009 to December 2009 rapidly cool down for the winter allowing the region to see a very cold December. The next big impact that occurred between July and December was the abundance of moisture that fell from the region with all of these months at or well above the normal monthly rainfall for this time of the year. The month of December also greeted the region with snowfall which is typical for El-Nino. However El-Nino continued on into the first part of 2010 as well bringing with it a continued cold pattern through the remainder of the winter and also more precipitation with the months of January to April seeing their share of rainfall and again the region saw another shot of snowfall in March of 2010. So if we evaluate El-Nino it’s safe to say the region sees a pleather of rainfall along with increased chances of snowfall and cold temps during the winter months.
Now looking into what a La-Nina can do to the region. The last La-Nina occurred during the months of July 2010 into March of 2011 followed by another mid-year push into the first part of 2012. For the blog purposes we will concentrate on the months of July 2010 through March of 2011. The biggest things that stick out for this location during a La-Nina year are first the chance of seeing a tornado increases for the area. The next thing that has large impacts on the Dallas area during a La-Nina phase is the potential of seeing multiple months with well below average total precipitation to occur. The temperatures during a La-Nina phase do also become a tad bit warmer during the winter months than what would be expected during an El-Nino or Normal phase when temps would be cooler. The chance for this region to experience a drought like pattern does also increase during a La-Nina phase.
To summarize a few points to make about what happens during the ENSO phase for Dallas Texas is that winters are quite different between El-Nino and also La-Nina along with severe weather which tends to favor the La-Nina cycle for this region. A third item is moisture Dallas sees an increase in moisture both from a snow fall prospective and also rainfall during a El-Nino cycle than they would during a La-Nina cycle.
