The All-New Acura TLX GT Racecar
The 2014 Detroit Auto Show featured many prototypes, concept vehicles, new production vehicles and a slew of racecars. Acura was one of the manufactures that unveiled a couple of new vehicles, a 2015 TLX prototype and a TLX GT Racecar.
The Acura TLX GT racecar was developed by Honda Performance Development (HPD) with a slew of improvements and upgrades from the base TLX model.
The aerodynamics were greatly improved by the addition of an aero kit, including a front lip spoiler, side skirts, a huge rear wing, and new front and rear bumpers. Along with the aero kit, Acura’s Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system keeps the TLX GT attached to the track.
The base engine is a direct-injected V-6 which can accelerate the TLX to a four second 0-60 and cruise at a top speed of 186 mph. HPD added two turbochargers onto the base V-6 and boosted the hp to race car performance.
The Acura TLX GT will be competing in the top category of the Pirelli World Challenge against racing models like Audi R8 LMS, Cadillac CTS-V, Corvette, Viper, Lamborghini, Mercedes SLS, Nissan GTR, Porsche 911 and the Ferrari 458.
“The 2015 Acura TLX is a true luxury sport sedan, so it is fitting that the car be raced against several of its natural luxury competitors in the Pirelli World Challenge. Acura and Peter Cunningham’s RealTime Racing organization have a long history of success together, and we look forward to adding to that tradition with the Acura TLX GT race car in 2014,” said Art St. Cyr, President of Honda Performance Development and Vice President-Product Planning and Logistics, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in a press release statement.
RealTime Racing (RTR), who will be piloting the Acura LTX GT, is based in Wisconsin and is considered to be the most successful team in the history of the Pirelli World Challenge. The team was started in 1987 by Peter Cunningham and since he began competing in the Sports Car Club of America Pro Racing-sanctioned World Challenge, the team has recorded astounding results. The team has 85 wins, 14 Manufacturers’ Championships and 14 Drivers’ Championships.
“In our 27 years of racing Hondas and Acuras, we have developed a clear understanding of what it takes to win races and championships. In 2014, the Pirelli World Challenge GT class looks to be more competitive and diverse than at any time in the 25-year history of the series. RealTime has competed successfully in this category before, and we look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. With the onslaught of these world-class GT-3 competitors joining the fray, we will be working hard to develop the new TLX GT into a winning package. But that’s what we love to do,” RTR team principle Cunningham added.
