The 2014 Nissan Juke NISMO: Economy Or Race? Both!
Car manufacturers put out production vehicles in all shapes and sizes. High economy vehicles getting 30-40 mpg or more, as well as high performance vehicles dipping into the sub four-second 0-60 mph sprint, are all part of their line-ups.
Imagine being able to get your hands on a car that can have both: excellent fuel economy as well as decent performance. Back in the early days of muscle cars with high output engines, the fuel mileage was, well, not too impressive.
I know, I owned one. It was a very impressive, performance wise, 1971 Mustang Fastback with a 427 Cobra Jet V-8 motor. But when you put your foot down on the accelerator, you could also see the gas gauge move. I always said the speedometer and gas gauge would have a race whenever I got the lead foot urge.
I have also owned the fuel-efficient, sub-compact, four-cylinder slow pokes that make the bystanders point and laugh as you drive by.

Nissan has changed the rule of having either good performance or great gas mileage by combining them into one vehicle. It’s the 2014 Nissan Juke NISMO. Not a GT-R by any stretch of the imagination, but it does have enough oomph to hold its own, performance wise.
The Juke is gasoline-powered with a 1.6-liter turbocharged 16-valve I-4 engine. The front- wheel-drive (FWD), front engine is matched to either a six-speed manual or a CVT automatic. An all-wheel-drive (AWD) option is available.
While pushing out 197 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 184 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm, doesn’t sound that impressive, it’s enough to sprint down the track at a 6.8 second, 0-60 mph and a top speed of 130 mph.
The fuel mileage is also impressive, getting 25 city and 31 highway from the FWD and 25 city, 30 highway from the AWD version.
Push-button ignition is joined by a push-button sport mode for that performance feel as it up-shifts at redline.
The exterior features are as impressive as the performance / fuel economy combination. The headlights are smoked and the front turn signals are integrated into the upper fenders. It has a center-mounted stoplight, and a center mounted rear fog lamp. Also having front and rear fascias with red stripes, side sills, a rear liftgate with fixed glass, rear spoiler, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that round out the stylish exterior.
Interior features synthetic suede seats with six-way manual driver’s side and four-way manual passenger’s side controls. NISMO trim and logos are featured throughout. An AM/FM/CD player with six speakers has speed-sensitive volume control with steering wheel mounted audio controls. The Sirius XM Satellite Radio, subscription not included, uses a black fixed rod antenna.
A navigation package is offered for $1,170 with a rearview monitor, six upgraded speakers, NavTraffic, a Rockford Fosgate ecoPUNCH audio system with 8-inch subwoofer and amplifier, and a USB port for an IPOD.
The price for the Juke NISMO for 2014 has not been released yet, but the 2013 Juke base price was $24,000 and the NISMO is only a few thousand more.
