Sun Signs: Elements And Qualities

Apr 26, 14 Sun Signs: Elements And Qualities

The first article on astrology identified some general background information. This one will dig just a little deeper to give a fuller understanding of astrology. Let’s take a deeper look at the Elements and Qualities.

Elements:

Earth
Taurs
Virgo
Capricorn

Air
Gemini
Libra
Aquarius

Fire
Aries
Leo
Sagittarius

Water
Cancer
Scorpio
Pisces

What follows is a general explanation of the elements. Again, I caution to assume that everyone who falls into these Elements is just this way, but these are commonly accepted understandings of the Elements.

In general, the characteristics of Earth Elements are grounded. Creation is important to Earth signs whether that’s in terms of jobs, procreation, creating comfort, creativity, and the like. Because they focus on the solid and tangible, Earth signs may have a greedy or materialistic side to them. However, Earth signs believe in duty, responsibility, logic, and reliability to others. Obviously, this means that Earth signs are there when we need them. They are sensualists yet not overly (or annoyingly) focused on others. They are the hearths, the balance.

Air signs, on the other hand, are all about the abstract. Grounding, schmounding, so say Air signs. They love analysis, synthesis, and probing just as much as they love communication. Perhaps we might call them gregarious. All this leads to their alert curiosity and perceptiveness. So what’s the downfall? Well, their enthusiasm and intellect can blow many ways. In other words, they are a bit wishy-washy and emotional. Their passion influences this. But that same passion is what makes them open and accepting.

Moving onto Fire signs, oh what a difference. Where Earth signs are grounded and calm and Air signs are accepting and positive, Fire is, well, fiery as it were. They are enthusiastic, creative, and lively. Zest for life is the phrase that most identifies the Fire signs. They love deeply and strongly, which also means that they can come across forceful, maybe even selfish. As Fire, that also means they can burn, so be careful.

Finally, there’s Water, good ol’ soothing water. As the most flexible of signs, Water signs are fluid with great sensitivity and intuition, which means they are more nurturing. Of course, this also means that they focus more on emotion than logic. Feelings, feelings, feelings. Water signs focus on the artistic and the aesthetic beauty. However, water signs need to be active – actively helping others, creating, moving – elsewise they brood. Their fluidity lends itself to moodiness. They feel so deeply and truly that sometimes that affects even the happiest of Water signs.

Qualities:

Cardinal
Aries
Cancer
Libra
Capricorn

Fixed
Taurus
Leo
Scorpio
Aquarius

Mutable
Gemini
Virgo
Sagittarius
Pisces

Again, these are the commonly accepting characteristics of Qualities, which means they aren’t the absolute.

Those with Cardinal Qualities initiate activity and change. They get the ball rolling, so to speak. Their ambition moves activity but does not always reach finality. At times, though, this manifests itself in a bit of self-centered focus.

Fixed Qualities focus more on steadiness. They focus not on the inception of the project but on the end goal. Their stability and tenacity helps them focus and persist. They are self-reliant and stubborn, but they will not forget those who help them along the way. They love to get the job done, and love those who help them do it.

Finally, let’s move to the Mutable Qualities. Maybe not the initiator or the finisher, but Mutable Qualities go with the flow. Their adaptability and flexibility make them very resourceful. They love to learn, play fair, and are diplomatic. Plus, they are sharp, sympathetic, and see more than meets the eye. They do aim to please, which means that they can come across as wishy-washy or even duplicitous. But they are also quick to help others and have a selflessness that Fixed and Cardinal do not. Their flexibility also allows them to bounce back when they’ve stretched themselves to barely existing.

Understanding the Elements and Qualities will help as we delve deeper into the individual sun signs.
