Sun Signs: Cancer

May 24, 14 Sun Signs: Cancer

Moving on in our series, we see the fourth sign, which is Cancer. For those born from June 22 through to July 23, you are the crab as Linda Goodman’s blog explains. And the crab is the perfect mascot for the Cancer. Its hard outer shell protects its fragile inner feelings.

The Cancer, according to Astrology.com, is all about home and hearth. They love and protect their families with vehemence because roots are important to the Cancer. In the words of Astrology.com, “Cancers are maternal, domestic and love to nurture others.” They also wear their heart for all to see, so none must question whether or not a Cancer loves them.

But in wearing their heart so openly, others also see the changing moods of the Crab. The Cancer is ruled by the waxing and waning Moon, which means that the Cancer’s moods wax and wane rather obviously. As Goodman states, “The Cancerian’s passing moods are synchronized to the Moon, answering to the same mysterious lunar influence that causes the tides of the ocean to flow in and out. Yet, the Moon doesn’t really change at all. It just seems to. Likewise, the Cancerian remains the same person through all his fluctuating highs and lows. Such dependable periodicity-constant in its inconstancy-makes the crab easy to recognize, once you know the phase he’s in when you see him.” The Cancer may be easily influenced by her moods, but her core, her essence, stays constant.

And that makes sense considering the way that the Crab holds onto hearth. The Cancer male and female are both very maternal in their actions and emotions.

As far as Element and Quality go, the Cancer associates with Water and Cardinal. To be a Water Element means that the Cancer is flexible, sensitive, and intuitive. For a Cancer who focuses on the home, this shows their love of nurturing. The Water Elements also have a tendency to brood if they are not active in their nurturing. The Cardinal Qualities tend to be the active changers. They get projects started.

The Crab is tenacious, sensitive, strong-willed, rooted, and nurturing. They are also moody and tempted to become selfish. They are flexible yet rooted. The Cancer cares and loves deeply. The Moon may rule a Cancer’s moods, but the core of the Cancer changes not.

I write this zodiac blog on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2014, and I want to dedicate this to my mother, the first Cancer I knew. Though this will likely publish in two weeks, I want her to know that she is the most important Cancer in my life. She embodies the nurturing hearth and home of the Cancer well. She has always made me feel protected and loved. She adores water and finds herself drawn to it much like the Crab. And also like the Crab, she has a tough outer shell and warm inner core. Everything I know about Cancers, I learned from her. Though she certainly does not fit the entirety of Cancer according to Astrology.com and Linda Goodman’s blog, she certainly shows the hearth, the love, the protection, and fluidity that make the Cancer so strong.
