As was stated during my last post, I am not familiar with StarCraft.  My goal in this post is to explain the game of StarCraft.  The original game was released in 1998, and became a worldwide phenomenon, particularly in South Korea.  The sequel was released in July of 2010, 12 years after the original release.  When released in 1998, StarCraft became the best-selling game of the year.  It is still one of the most popular games in the world.  The question is how do you play this game?  What is the goal of this game?  How do you win?

StarCraft is a Real Time Strategy game, or RTS for short.  Within the game itself there are three different teams to choose from: the Terren, Protos, and Zerg (no relation to the Toy Story character Evil Emperor Zurg).  These three teams are basically at war with each other to control the area of space known as the Koprulu sector.  This is the main setting for the game.  The Koprulu sector is allegedly 60,000 light years from Earth at the other end of the Milky Way, with the game taking place at the beginning of the 26th century.

Let me quickly summarize each of the teams available.  The Terrans are people who were exiled from the Earth basically because of overpopulation.  They resettled in the area known as the Koprulu sector.  It is believed there are between 9 and 13 important colony planets.  The Zerg are a race of insectoid aliens that want genetic perfection by assimilating other races, and they have been infesting the planets populated by humans.  The last team a person can choose are the Protoss.  They are a humanoid species that have access to advanced technology and also possess psionic, or psychic, abilities.  The goal of the Protoss is to preserve their way of life, and stop the Zerg from expanding at any cost.  Those are the three available teams in a nutshell.

The goal of the game is to defeat the enemy not just by being the best in combat like in a first person shooter, but also to be a better resource manager.  This intrigues me, because I am into FPS games, and the only thing you have to manage is the amount of bullets or grenades you have and how high or low your life bar is.

According to the information I have been able to gather, there are two resources that need to be managed, so that a player can grow their economy and build their armies: minerals and vespene gas.  The minerals are mined by a worker unit from mineral nodes that are placed around the battle field, and are used in all the units and structures you need to make for game play.  Vespene gas is acquired by building something aking to a refinery over a geyser, and the harvested gas is used for buildings and advanced units.

There is a campaign mode for StarCraft which explains how to build units and bases, and how to go about defeating your enemy.  At this point in time the big thing is and will remain the multiplayer aspect of the game.  This is where the kings of the game live, like Lim Yo-Hwan, the professional gamer from the previous post.  This is where tournaments are decided, where prize money involved is won, where bragging rights are earned – where the right to claim the title of the best video gamer in the world can be attained.

The Good: I am getting more interested in this game, and I am going to try and get a copy soon.  Just for research, of course, but who is to say I can’t enjoy doing research?
