Thanks to our friends at Top Speed, we can bring you the following automotive news and information.

As long as automobiles have been produced, there has been competition to be number one. Looks, style, durability, and, of course, who has the best performance are all on the automakers’ mind when they manufacture their vehicles.

During the New York International Auto Show, an award was presented by the World Car Awards to the third generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman as the 2013 World Performance Car. These mid-engine German-made sports cars were against the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GT86, which were the other finalists in the competition.

The base Boxster’s options are a 2.7-liter, 265 hp engine, or the S model’s 3.4-liter 315 hp engine. These power plants are attached to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch PDK transmission. The 0-to-60 time for the base version is 4.7 seconds. The base price for the Boxster is $49,500 and $60,900 for the S model; a $950 destination charge is extra.

The base Cayman’s options are a 2.7-liter, 275 hp engine or the S model’s 3.4-liter, 325 hp engine. The transmission options are the same as the Boxster’s and the 0-to-60 time is 4.4 seconds. The base price for the Cayman is $52,600 and $63,800 for the S model; a $950 destination charge is extra.

These two sports cars are third generation models that have been redesigned to be lighter, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient than the previous models. They have a longer wheelbase and larger wheels, which improves handling for a better driving experience.

Last year, the Porsche 911 won the competition and in 2006 the Cayman won this award.

This annual award is presented in four categories: Car Design, Green Car, Performance Car and Car of the Year. A panel of 66 automotive journalists from 23 countries determines the winner. The members of the panel are chosen by the World Car Steering Committee for their expertise, experience, credibility and influence.

During the press event, Detlev von Platen, CEO of Porsche Cars North America said, “To be chosen as the winner of the World Performance Car by this global jury is extremely rewarding. The new Boxster is a serious sports car and has become a worldwide success. Its brother, the new Cayman, is launching this month and has already captivated sports car enthusiasts around the world.”
