New Year’s Resolutions Hit Again
Yep. It is that time of year again when many people will partake in the traditional push for resolutions. These are often commitments we make to ourselves. Every New Year’s Day people list what they want to do or learn or work on for the new year. 2013 is no different. My friends and family have been talking about their New Year’s Resolutions for the past couple of weeks. I thought I’d post some of those with reasons why people choose them.
The number one resolution I have heard in the past couple of weeks is a New Year’s diet plan. Almost everyone I know has talked about starting a diet in January 2013. I think this comes from many places. First, I think the holiday season, starting really with Halloween, has people eating and feeling heavier. So, what better time to drop weight then at the end of the holiday season and the beginning of a new year?
I think this resolution is also one that comes from vanity. People want to look good–whatever that means–thus they try to commit to a diet plan with the new year. A new year brings new hope that people can be thinner, sexier, and more desirable.
For some who commit to a diet in the new year, they truly are committing to a healthier lifestyle. These individuals look at their resolution not as a means to lose weight but as a means to be healthier in their eating choices. I would bet that those who make healthy eating a new year’s resolution are more successful than those who do it to lose weight. Though I don’t have any proof for that, I know that in my own life when I committed to eating healthy for the sake of being healthier, I stuck with my eating habits. When I dieted, I did not.
Another resolution I heard a lot of is directly related to dieting. You guessed it–it’s working out. I heard many individuals planning out their work-out routine for the new year. Some of these individuals were only focusing on lifting weights to build muscles while others focused on cardio workouts such as running, walking, or biking. Some planned to do both.
The third resolution that many people talked to me about was getting organized particularly in terms of budgets. Several of my friends and family worked out a specific monthly budget that included bill pay, saving money, and spending on things they wanted or needed.
But getting organized also included better scheduling of their lives. They want to balance their work life with their personal life (including their social lives as well as private lives). So many of us are unbalanced in these areas. Often people focus on their professional lives and lose time on their personal lives, or they are ruled by their personal life and cannot build a professional life. Organizing our time so that we spend more time with our loved ones than we do with our professions is definitely a good thing, but we also need success and satisfaction professionally, which means we need our loved ones to be on board for our work lives. Work is important, but so are we as individuals.
I heard other resolutions, but these three were the most popular. Even when I looked on Facebook or Google, these three seemed to be the most chosen. I can’t say that I think these are bad resolutions. I don’ really participate in the New Year’s Resolution tradition, but I think for those who do, they could do worse than want to eat healthier, exercise more, and organize their lives.
