Mesothelioma Treatment And Life Expectancy

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. Only a small percentage of patients survive long after they have been diagnosed. Usually mesothelioma life expectancy for patients is approximately 4 to 18 months, after they have been properly diagnosed with the disease. Less than 10 percent of diagnosed patients live more than five years. Mesothelioma patients go through four stages as the disease spreads throughout the body. Medical chemists are working on a cure to prolong the life expectancy of mesothelioma victims. As patients typically live less than a year after diagnosis, patients should know of common questions about mesothelioma lawsuits and how to ensure that their loved ones can support themselves if the unfortunate should happen.
The first stage of the disease is often found in one central location. If the disease is detected in this stage, there is a great possibility that the tumor can be removed, and a full recovery is expected. In stage two the cancer is no longer localized, it has moved to other areas of the body, and surgery may or may not be an option. In stage three patients have very little chance of recovery. Surgery is only used at this point to alleviate pain, and make the patients feel at ease. Stage four is the final stage for mesothelioma patients. The cancer has spread throughout the body, and the patients are in much pain. The mesothelioma life expectancy in the final stages is incredibly low.
Patients have a higher survival rate when the disease is caught early. The symptoms of Mesothelioma donât usually occur right away. It usually takes years for patients to find out they have the disease, and when they do, it is usually too late. Later stages of mesothelioma do not respond well to treatment or surgery.
When the disease is detected in its early stage, more mesothelioma treatment options are available. Patients may be eligible candidates for aggressive treatment programs such as chemotherapy or radiation. Patients in the early stage of mesothelioma, and who are not advanced in age, are normally good candidates for the extensive treatment program.
Mesothelioma treatment is very aggressive. Patients must be in good physical condition to undergo extensive treatment. Life expectancy is determined by prognosis and histopathological factors. Patients usually implement holistic and alternative medicine so they will have a better chance of survival. Patients using these types of methods usually live longer than their life expectancy diagnosis.
There are presently several forms of mesothelioma; Pleural, Pericardia and Peritoneal. Pleural Mesothelioma affects the tissues around the lungs. It is the most common of the disease. Peritoneal and Pericardia Mesothelioma affect the stomach and heart respectively and remain the most difficult types of cancer to treat.
However, there are several forms of therapy outside of traditional medicine that are effective in alleviating mesothelioma symptoms. Patients claim they find comfort in acupuncture and holistic healing. Healthy eating also plays a major role in combating mesothelioma. The healthier the body, the stronger the body becomes, and the better the body can fight disease. It is important for patients to develop and maintain a healthy immune system.
