According to Holiday Insights, March is a month that boasts many national celebrations:
- Irish American Month
- Music in Our Schools Month
- National Craft Month
- National Frozen Food Month
- National Irish American Heritage Month- designated by Congress in 1995.
- National Nutrition Month
- National Peanut Month
- National Women’s History Month
- Red Cross Month
- Social Workers Month
Each of these deserves attention; however, letâs focus on a few of them with a common theme: health.
First of all, letâs look at National Craft Month, which focuses mostly on retailers, but that does not mean that crafters canât enjoy the fun. So often we all are so busy with work and family that we forget to engage in our more creative and crafty sides. Crafts vary in activity. Here is a list of just some crafting activities:
- Making jewelry
- And so many more!
Crafts tap into our artistic sides. Often, the end result of crafts is something incredible. Making sure to make time for hobbies like different crafts is definitely important to our health for several reasons. Crafts help us to engage our brains, reduce stress, be creative, and find time for something we love to do, which is to say find time for ourselves. So for the rest of March, get your craft on!
Another important national celebration is National Nutrition Month. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this yearâs theme for National Nutrition Month is âEnjoy the Taste of Eating Right.â As the website explains, âConsumer research confirms that taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. While social, emotional and health factors also play a role, the foods people enjoy are likely the ones they eat most. This year’s key messages for NNM focus on how to combine taste and nutrition to create healthy meals that follow the Dietary Guidelines recommendations.â
The current Dietary Guidelines focus on three areas: balancing calories with activity to manage weight, consuming certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy, and seafood, and consuming foods with less sodium, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugar, and refined grains.
The third important celebration is Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross states, âEvery nine minutes, the American Red Cross brings help and hope to people in need, thanks to heroes like you. Whether you donate funds, donate blood or volunteer, we depend on your support to make a difference in communities across the country.â So Red Cross Month is all about promoting that mission. The American Red Cross has touched almost all of our lives in one way or another. Whether a state experiences a natural disaster or man-made one, the Red Cross steps up.
For instance, when tornadoes devastate my home state of Oklahoma, the Red Cross is there to help people in a variety of ways. When the tragedy of 911 struck, Red Cross was there. In fact, if we look at all of the need over the past decades, we will find the Red Cross. Its mission is to help, and help it does.
The other celebrations are equally as important as these three, but the emphasis on health that these focus on is definitely worth noting. March is full of celebration, so letâs get out there and enjoy, promote, and celebrate.
