Thus far, the mortal who will later become our vampire character for Vampire: The Requiem is coming along nicely. Fang is a Modern Savage with a Virtue of Fortitude and the Vice of Wrath. Now it’s time to start determining her attributes.

One thing that I love about the Storyteller system is how they have set up their attributes. There are nine in total, divided into three categories of three. You have your three physical stats of Strength, Dexterity, and Stamina, your three mental stats of Intelligence, Wits, and Resolve, and your three social stats of Presence, Manipulation, and Composure. Each of these three categories has a power stat (Strength, Intelligence, and Presence), a subtlety stat (Dexterity, Wits, and Manipulation), and a resistance stat (Stamina, Resolve, and Composure). This division helps give players a good feel for how their character will play, what they will be good at, and where their focus will be.

When determining your starting attributes, we put one point into each – as you get that for free – and then we look at what category of physical, mental, and social will be our most important. For Fang, this is fairly easy. She is a very physical character, and so physical will be her primary attribute pool. Next, mental, as she is still somewhat wise and cunning. Finally, social will be her tertiary attribute category, as she has little use or patients for others and is thusly not all that adept in civil interaction.

We get five points to divide among her three physical stats, four among her mental stats, and three among her social stats. The way attributes are ranked is one is poor, two is a basic average, three is good, and four is great. Five is the maximum any one attribute can be, but giving us that fifth point counts as two, so I do not find it to be worthwhile at this stage.

For our physical attributes, we will give Fang one into Strength, giving her a two, two into Dexterity, and two into Stamina, giving her a three in both. For her mental attributes, let’s keep her Intelligence at a one and then put two points into each of her Wits and Resolve, making each of those a three. Finally, for her social attributes, we will keep her Manipulation at one, as she is none too subtle of tongue, put one point into Composure, giving her a two in it, and two points into Presence which gives her a three. So, to sum-up, Fang possesses average Strength and Composure, good Dexterity, Stamina, Wits, Resolve, and Presence, and poor Intelligence and Manipulation. What this means is that, while not well educated or skilled at social graces, she is quick, tough, cunning, steadfast, and imposing, which are all very appropriate for our Modern Savage.

Next time we will finish up our mortal build of Fang with her skills and, following that, we will begin the process of turning her from human into a vampire.
