In continuing with our look at Star Wars in honor of May the Fourth (be with you), we are going to look at what it takes to build a character for the Star Wars: Saga Edition Role-playing Game. As always, this will not be a complete guide to making a character. For that, you will need the book yourself. This is more akin to what goes into making a character, what steps to take, and some of the thought that goes into it. So, with that said, lets begin.

Star Wars: Saga Edition uses a variant of the d20 system. In fact, this was a test run for what would eventually become the fourth edition of Dungeons & Dragons. I always find it funny that, while not a fan of that game, I really do enjoy Saga Edition and its system. For this character build, I am going to build Tuu’lan, a Twi’lek (those often green head-tail people) freelancer who roams the space-ways looking for adventure. That already has step one covered, as I have already chosen the character’s race. Next, we will select their class and, as the character I have in mind has a very Han Solo feel to them, let’s go with Scoundrel.

Next we need the character’s attributes. The game uses the same six attributes, as does most other d20 games, and for this we will use the point-buy method to purchase them. Because this is a space-faring rogue, I would like our character to have higher than average Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma. A good Constitution and Wisdom score never hurt, leaving the one stat I really do not care about being Strength. After some quick number crunching, I came up with Strength 8, Dexterity 14, Constitution 11, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 12, and Charisma 14. To this we apply the racial modifiers of the Twi’lek, which are a +2 to Charisma and -2 to Wisdom, as they are very personable, but also somewhat weak-willed. This makes our final stat block Strength 8, Dexterity 14, Constitution 11, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 16.

Next, we will note our character’s racial and class abilities. Twi’leks are medium-sized creatures (like humans) and thus gain no special bonus or detriment based on size, they have a base speed of six (also human-like), they gain the ability Deceptive, which means they can choose to re-roll any Deception skill check, though they must take the second result if they do. They gain Great Fortitude, giving them a +2 bonus to their Fortitude Defense (which we will figure in later), and Low-light Vision. Scoundrels, meanwhile, start with +2 to their Reflex Defense and +1 to their Will Defense, the starting feats of Point Blank Shot, Proficiency in both pistols and simple weapons, and a single talent chosen from either the Fortune tree, the Misfortune tree, the Slicer tree, or the Spacer tree. Though tempted by Spacer, for this character let’s go with Fortune and pick up Knack, which allows the character to re-roll any skill check, taking the better result, once per day.

Tuu’lan, our Twi’lek Scoundrel, is already taking shape. Next we will be looking over the character’s starting trained skills and choose their starting feat.
