Learn Power Search Strategies With Google’s Online Class
It is time to strengthen your Google Fu.
The search master is offering its own online class “Power Searching with Google” to help those who want to impress friends, coworkers, and family with their own mad search skills.
It sure beats learning to crochet or improving resume writing skills. The class is taught by Dan Russell, a senior research scientist at Google. The goal, according to Google’s Inside Search blog, is to help users find results faster, locate credible sources, and solve complex problems.
The blog post lists interpreting results, finding facts quicker, and fact-checking as among the skills that participants will learn. The class is self-paced, so no need to stress about a bunch of deadlines and laborious homework.
There are six, 50-minute classes, interactive activities, and strategies from several members of Google’s search team.
The complete schedule includes:
- Pre-class assessment
- Class 1 – Introduction
- Class 2 – Interpreting results
- Class 3 – Advanced techniques
- Mid-class assessment
- Class 4 – Find facts faster
- Class 5 – Checking your facts
- Class 6 – Putting it all together
- Post-class assessment
Russell said in the announcement that a previous session of the course was highly popular.
“During the course’s first run in July, people told us how they not only liked learning about new features and more efficient ways to use Google, but they also enjoyed sharing tips and learning from one another through the forums and Hangouts. Ninety-six percent of people who completed the course also said they liked the format and would be interested in taking similar courses, so we plan to offer a suite of upcoming courses in the coming months, including Advanced Power Searching,” he said.
The course runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 10. It even comes with a colorful, Googly certificate of completion. While “Power Searching with Google” is not as strict as other courses for academic credit, there is a mid-class and post-assessment to check up on your newly acquired skills. After scoring your certificate, one great test would be to take on A Google A Day, the company’s daily search trivia question.
