I’ve Never Seen Star Wars
In celebration of “May the Fourth be with You,” redOrbit is hosting a series of Star Wars-inspired blogs.
May the 4th be with you? What in the world is that all about? As our editors shake their heads in disgust, they’ve explained to me that Saturday is a kind of a big deal to you Trekkies.
Oh, Star Wars and Star Trek aren’t spin offs of one another? I thought it was all the same thing! I guess Trekkies isn’t an appropriate name for followers of Star Wars. What is it then? Wars-ies?
All kidding aside, the editors here at redOrbit thought it’d be fun for all of us bloggers to crank out a blog or two to celebrate May the 4th in the name of Star Wars. Only problem is, I’ve never seen it.
Our head editor is actually one of my college professors (that’s how I got the job) and through the course of our friendship, he’s made all kinds of obscure movie references that I never catch. I explained to him one day, I don’t watch a lot of movies, and even when I do, they don’t stick in my head like they do with most people.
Seriously, I could watch a movie today, and couldn’t tell you anything about it tomorrow. Music, on the other hand, sticks for some reason.
Anyhow, he emailed me this morning asking to write a blog about Star Wars. Then I’m guessing he reconsidered and asked me instead to write a blog about not having ever seen Star Wars, so here it is.
I. Have. Never. Seen. Star. Wars.
I feel like such a failure.
I can vaguely remember seeing one scene of the original one at my babysitter’s house when I was a kid, but then I ran off to play or do something that I deemed was more fun at the time. I’m guessing it was the original because it was 20 some odd years ago, but who knows.
I’ve played a few Star Wars video games if that counts for anything? The one where they race in those floating dragster looking things and that lizard-faced guy is in it? C’mon y’all know the one I’m talking about; it was on Nintendo 64 I think.
Other than that, I have absolutely no connection to Star Wars, never have.
It may come as a surprise to anyone who’s read any of my other blogs because I am quite the nerd, and from what I think I understand of Wars-ies, being a nerd and a huge Star Wars fan are basically synonymous.
Truthfully, I just don’t get it. It’s just a movie (and a video game, and a Lego series, and a complete lifestyle), what’s the big deal?
I’m sure it’s a great movie, or a great series of movies, and I’d probably love it if I gave it the time of day, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I’ve never seen any of the Iron Man movies, nor Spider Man, X-Men, or Lord of the Rings either; sue me.
