Food For Thought…Literally (Part 2)
In my previous post, we discovered the importance of having certain foods in our daily diets for the good of our brain. In this post, we will continue to unravel some amazing power food for our marvelous gray matter.
So far, we have discussed the importance of grains and fatty acids for the better functioning of our brain, but what about our short term memory? Or things we can eat to prevent memory loss? How about things to help you learn?
Toe-may-toe or toe-mah-toe
Either way you pronounce it, adding tomatoes into you diet can be very beneficial to you in the long run. There is plenty of evidence that suggests the antioxidant found in tomatoes, called lycopene, can actually help protect against and even completely prevent the damaged caused to neurons, especially during the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s.
Sync in with zinc
Want to enhance your memory and thinking skills? Then grab a handful of pumpkin seeds or any other seeds that contain zinc. Zinc is an important mineral that aids in many aspects of our body functions, as well as brain functions. In our bodies, zinc helps fortify our immune system, which allows us to heal faster, and help slow down the aging process on our skin. Our brain uses zinc to help aid with memory and cognitive skills, such as learning and thinking.
Example: seeds (sesame, poppy, alfalfa, celery, mustard, pumpkin sunflower)
From previous studies, we know that blueberries have a high level of antioxidants but that’s not all! A study performed by Tufts University suggests that eating a constant supply of blueberries can actually help to effectively delaying or even improving short term memory loss. The study also suggests that the intake of blueberries can actually aid in the brains natural learning process. So, if you are having trouble remembering what you did a few days ago, or learning new information quick enough, grab a handful of blueberries and pop them into your mouth. They are small and sweet and easily found in your nearest grocery store.
So, there you have it. If you want a properly functioning brain, make sure you have your grains and essential oils. If you want your brain to function properly longer, make sure you have your constant intake red, white and blue with the various antioxidants and minerals found in tomatoes, seeds and blueberries.
