Flying Overseas (Part 2)
Right, so I wrote about what sucks about flying in my last post, but now it’s time to look at what is so wonderful and fun and exciting about flying. I have flown all over the United States and the world, and each time I embark, all I can really feel is that excitement. It really is a modern marvel of wonderfulness.
Advantage #1: Time Saver
When one can fly in less than two hours to a destination that would take eight hours by car, I call that a win. Not only is this convenient for planned trips, but it is also critical for emergencies. The plane revolutionized connection. And I am so grateful for it.
Advantage #2: Convenience
Now, not only can we save time by flying, but we also can use flights to do some major work. Right now, I am writing this article, earbuds in my ears with Pink Floyd playing, while the rest of the plane watches movies, listens to their own music, works on their own stuff, or sleeps. It’s really amazing. I often do not get this time of quiet time at home because I have so many projects and responsibilities at work—not to mention my personal projects and responsibilities—that time to just focus like this is virtually non-existent. I’m not complaining, really. I like being busy. I am acknowledging that flying does provide this perk of focused quiet time. I can’t complain about it…in fact, I love it.
Advantage #3: Traveling
I know when I enter a plane that I have the distinct privilege to travel to another part of the country or the world. Naturally, this happens when we enter a car, bus, or train, but there’s something magical about this on a plane. I feel like I’m in some sort of sci-fi story where new technology allows for new experiences. It’s awesome. I know that people have been flying for decades now, but it’s still so exciting to be traveling in the air instead of on the ground.
Advantage #4: The Flight
Sometimes, it’s true, the flight can be cramped and uncomfortable. Maybe I’m seated next to a poor little baby who cries. I get it, but I do have to cope with the screams and tears. Or perhaps I am placed next to the talkative fellow who wants me to know his whole life. I won’t say no or tell him to stop, but I will resent the time he usurps from me. All that…and so much more icky…can happen, but usually a flight is not that. Take my flight right now, for instance. I’m flying over the Atlantic Ocean, seated in the bulk-head, emergency row, and I am very comfortable and happy. I’m writing, which is an activity I love to do, but I am also able to spread out a bit and relax. I have an eight-hour flight, so this seat will save me.
I also have a wonderful flight attendant who has been very kind and helpful. Right now, the flight wins. What I’m experiencing right now is the type of flight we all want and hope for. I may not have this type of experience the next time I travel, but I know that at some point a blissful experience like this one will happen to me again. And these make the icky flights well worth the experience.
All in all, good and bad, I really love flying. I’ll take all the disadvantages because the advantages are just awesome. I think maybe I should go ahead and enjoy some of those right now.
