Dirty Vehicles

Dec 20, 12 Dirty Vehicles

There is no amount of car washes that will clean these dirty rides. Forbes has put out a list of the top vehicles for 2013 that are anti-environmental. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has three categories in which they rate a vehicle for environmental purposes. The first is combined fuel economy, or the average miles per gallon calculated from highway MPG and city MPG. The second is air pollution, which is pollution emitted from the tailpipe that causes smog. They rate it between 1 and 10, with 1 being the most pollutants released and 10 being the cleanest emissions. The last rating is green house gas, it is the carbon dioxide released into the air, and is scored in the same fashion as the air pollution scale; 1 being the most carbon dioxide released and 10 being the least.

Forbes took these standards and, by adding the three scores together, used the total as a score for its analysis to find out what vehicles were the least eco friendly. Three-quarter ton trucks and larger are excluded from the federal fuel economy testing, so they were not included.

Here are their findings, rated dirtiest of their class:

The dirtiest vehicle in its class, Low Volume Exotic, is the Bugatti Veyron with a score of 16. Its fuel economy rated a mere 10 MPG. Its air pollution was 5, which is considered an average rating. Where as its green house gas score was well below average with a score of 1.

In the class, Standard SUV, the Chevy Suburban had a score of 18. Fuel economy was a low 12 MPG, the air pollution and green house gas scores matched the Bugatti, 5 and 1 respectively.

The next two were both Mercedes-Benz with a total score of 23 for each one. The SLS AMG Coupe, in the Two Seater class, and the C63 AMG, in the Luxury Coupe class, had an identical fuel economy with 15 MPG, air pollution of 5, and their green house gas was 3.

In the Mid Size class was the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan with a score of 21. Fuel economy was 14, air pollution was 5 and green house gas was 2.

Oddly enough, in the Large Car class, the Mercedes-Benz S600 with a score of 21 had the identical score as the Cadillac, which is considered a mid size vehicle. I guess, in some cases, bigger is better.

Another Mercedes-Benz, the E63 AMG Wagon, in the Mid Size Wagon class, had a total score of 28. Its fuel economy was 18 MPG, air pollution was 6, and green house gas was 4.

When vehicles are being rated, American sports cars need to be rated also, and they were. In the Sports Car class was one of America’s favorite, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 with a score of 21. Its fuel economy was poor at 14 MPG, air pollution was 5, and green house gas was 2.

From these findings I have come to the conclusion the Mercedes-Benz makes the dirtiest cars on the road; being the worst in their class for the environment in 4 of the 8 classes rated by Forbes. And the dirtiest car is the Bugatti Veyron.
