Could A 128 GB iPad Arrive This Year?
Most developers enjoy receiving beta builds of the latest versions of iOS to ensure that their apps will continue to work properly.
Other developers enjoy receiving these new builds because it gives them a chance to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt, searching for clues about unreleased Apple products.
This weekend, some of these developers went digging into the newly released iOS 6.1 beta code and discovered some interesting references to a 128 GB iPad. According to 9 to 5 Mac, a similar reference had been spotted in an earlier build that was released in December. Yet, as time progresses so too does the rumor mill, and this reference to 128 GB has spurred on the rumors that Apple could be releasing yet another “new” iPad this time around.
Speaking to their sources, 9 to 5 Mac has said they’ve heard word that such an iPad will be released later this year, though they’ve yet to hear anything about the new iPad mini.
Contrary to earlier belief, the new SKU Apple has generated is not for a completely redesigned iPad. Instead, says 9 to 5 Mac, the new SKU could be the 128 GB Retina iPad, which will look mostly like the iPads we know today. Like the iPads we know and love, the 128 GB is said to ship in both black & white and Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular options. Additionally, 9 to 5 Mac says these iPads will be available in a 10-pack option, offered up to educational institutions.
What’s more, the 9 to 5 Mac report claims they’ve heard word on pricing, saying this new 128 GB model will start at $799. This price follows the natural progression of iPads, starting at $399 and growing by $100 with each doubling of capacity. The Wi-Fi + Cellular option tops out at a high $929.
The 9 to 5 Mac also reports that this new SKU may also be specific to governmental or even retail agencies rather than a new product. Though Apple has never released an iOS device with 128 GB of storage, such an iPad wouldn’t be much of an update.
If Apple does release a new iPad with 128 GB of storage, it’s likely they’ll also take the time to roll out some other updates, such as design, processor, etc. This sort of update is expected to happen in the fall.
When developers found this reference to a 128 GB, they also began to suspect that we may also see a larger capacity iPhone or iPod Touch this year. So much storage in these devices would certainly push the price of these models higher than they’ve ever been, but could also open the door to streamlining their product line. Some heavy and pro users of the iPhone have commented before that even 64 GB of storage isn’t enough, especially if one wants to keep their favorite movies and television shows stored on the device at all times. A large capacity iPod Touch could also signal the end of the iPod Classic, currently the only option for those who want to keep larger iTunes libraries stored on a single device without the aid of iTunes Match or other subscription services.
While this 9 to 5 Mac report claims there’s no plans for an imminent launch of a new iPad mini model, other reports have claimed that when such a model does launch, it could very well boast a Retina screen.
