Clean Cars

Dec 21, 12 Clean Cars

Recently, I wrote about the dirtiest vehicles on the road. Today, I decided to do a flip-flop and post about the cleanest vehicles around today. The ratings I used were combining average MPG with the EPA standards for air pollution and green house gas emission. I did not include any fully electric vehicles or pick-up trucks. I organized them in classes, and found the cleanest vehicle in each class. The classes I used are as follows: SUV, Compact, Midsized, Full Sized, Station Wagon, Sports Car, and Exotic. Then I broke down each class into Hybrids and gasoline only.

Here are my findings:

In the SUV class the cleanest vehicle is the Ford Escape Hybrid, 2WD, with a total score of 49. Its fuel economy is 33, air pollution score is 9, and its green house gas score is 7. The gasoline only winner is the Hyundai Tuscon, 2WD, having a total score of 42. Its fuel economy is 27, air pollution score is 9, and green house gas score is 6.

In the Compact Class the winner is the Honda Civic Hybrid, having a total score of 62. Its fuel economy is 44, air pollution and green house gas scores are both 9. The gasoline only winner is the Honda Civic HF, having a total score of 53. Its fuel economy is 36, air pollution score v 9, and green house gas score is 8.

In the Mid-Size class the winner is the Toyota Prius Hybrid, with a total score of 69. Its fuel economy is 50, air pollution score is 9, and its green house gas score is 10. The gasoline only winner is the Hyundai Elantra, having a total score of 52. Its fuel economy is 35, air pollution score is 9, and green house gas score is 8.

In the Full-Size class the winner is the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, with a total score of 35. Its fuel economy is 22, air pollution score is 9, and its green house gas score is 4. The gasoline only winner is the Hyundai Sonata, having a total score of 46. Its fuel economy is 30, air pollution score is 9, and green house gas score is 7.

In the Station Wagon class the winner is the Toyota Prius V, with a total score of 59. Its fuel economy is 42, air pollution score is 8, and green house gas score is 9. The gasoline only winner is the Subaru Impreza, having a total score of 48. Its fuel economy is 32, air pollution score is 9, and green house gas score is 7.

In the Sports Car class the winner is the Ford Mustang V6, with a total score of 36. Its fuel economy is 25, air pollution score is 6, and its green house gas score is 5. There are no hybrid sports cars that I could find.

And finally in the Exotic Car class the winner is the Porsche Cayman V6, with a total score of 34. Its fuel economy is 23, air pollution score was 6, and its green house gas score is 5. There are no hybrid exotic cars that I could find.

In conclusion, my view of the cleanest vehicle is the Toyota Prius Hybrid.
