Big Story Weather from April 17: Severe weather and blizzard conditions topped the weather yesterday. There were several heavy snowfall reports from Colorado into the Dakotas and severe weather with tornados from Oklahoma all the way into Illinois. Many places saw heavy rainfall and large hail as well.

Big Story Weather Discussion for April 18: Low pressure moving through Illinois will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region. These thunderstorms will extend all the way to the Gulf Coast. Expect to see a large area of severe weather in this region today. Snow will be falling on the northwest side of the storm with places in the Dakotas and Minnesota getting anywhere from three to six inches and heavier amounts are possible. A nice day is in store for the Southwest and parts of the West Coast.

Here is the weather for a few select cities:

Buffalo NY: Mostly cloudy with afternoon showers possible. High temps around 68F and overnight lows will be near 58F. Total rainfall will be around 0.15 inches.

Gulfport MS: Mostly cloudy with evening thunderstorms, some of which could become severe. High temps will be around 82F and low temps near 70F. Total rainfall will be around 0.45 inches.

Omaha NE: Mostly cloudy with periods of snow. Winds will be strong as well which will create near blizzard-like conditions. High temps will be around 35F and overnight lows near 30F. Total snowfall amounts around 6 inches possible.

Boise ID: Partly cloudy skies with a high near 50F and low temps near 44F.

Los Angeles CA: Partly cloudy skies with a high near 73F and the low temp near 66F.

April 18, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:

Atlantic Basin: An area of low pressure is moving into Central Europe and will bring some rain and higher elevation snows to the region. Low pressure moving south of Iceland will bring snow showers to the region along with gusty winds. Another powerful storm system will be moving into the Great Lakes today. Expect to see snow, rain and severe weather with this storm system.

Eastern Pacific: Low pressure moving towards the West Coast of Canada will bring showers and higher seas to the coastline today of Canada.

Western Pacific: Low pressure moving across the Pacific will bring rain and wind towards Midway. Another area of low pressure moving out of Eastern China will bring rain showers to the region and will spread eastward into Okinawa. A third area of strong low pressure is moving through Central Russia and will bring snow showers to the region.

Indian Ocean: Low pressure moving across the tip of Singapore and Thailand will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area. The remains of the tropical cyclone will continue to drift southward and have no impact on land.

Southern Hemisphere: Multiple areas of low pressure are moving through the basin again today. Expect to see low pressure impact Argentina with showers and strong winds. Another area of low pressure will bring showers and thunderstorms to South Africa. Low pressure moving southeast of Perth Australia will bring showers to the region today. Look for a few showers associated with low pressure moving towards New Zealand as well.

Five-Day Storm Index Outlook for April 18-22:

Buffalo NY: The period will start with slight impacts associated with rain showers moving through the area. The remainder of the outlook will be impact free.

Gulfport MS: The area will see moderate impacts to start the period associated with thunderstorms – some of which may be severe. The remainder of the period will be impact free.

Omaha NE: The period will see moderate impacts today due to heavy snow and strong winds. Then the area will enjoy two days impact free before another round of slight impacts moves in associated with the next round of rain showers.

Boise ID: The period will start impact free, but by April 20-21 the region will see a slight impact associated with a few rain showers.

Los Angeles CA: The region will remain impact free for the next five days .

Climate Watch for April 13-17:

Buffalo NY: The period started with temps around 8-12 degrees below normal and then finished the period with temps around 1-17 degrees above normal.

Gulfport MS: The period started with temps around 1-7 degrees below normal and finished the period with temps about 1-4 degrees above normal.

Omaha NE: The period saw an overall average of 10-17 degrees below normal. On April 14 the region did get to about 5 degrees above normal.

Boise ID: The past five days the region has seen temps running about 8-14 degrees below normal.

Los Angeles CA: The first four days of the period saw temps around 2-4 degrees below normal and then finished the period with temps around 3 degrees above normal.

Major Weather Impacts Discussion for April 18, 2013:

Day 1-3: Low pressure moving through Illinois today will bring showers and snow showers to the Lakes region. Look for the snow showers to extend back westward into the Northern Plains area as well. Snowfall amounts of 6 plus inches is very possible in this region. Showers and thunderstorms will also develop ahead of the cold front from Illinois to the Gulf Coast and parts of Eastern Texas. This region will see heavy rainfall along with the chance for severe weather with many tornadoes likely. The majority of the West Coast will enjoy a nice day. Day two the storm system will push into Southeast Canada and the associated cold front will extend all the way down to the Gulf Coast. Expect to see showers and thunderstorms along this front with the chance for another day of severe weather likely, especially around the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Strong and unseasonably cold high pressure will build over Texas bringing some places another frost and freeze potential. High pressure will be over the Great Lakes during this time, while another clipper system moves through the Northern Rockies with some light snow and rain.

Day 4-7: The period will start with high pressure over the Northeast, while the clipper system moves through the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes. A new storm system will be developing in the Southwest along with another clipper system moving into the Northwest. By day five the storm system will move into the Northern Plains and a strong cold area of high pressure will build in behind it bringing more rain and snow to the Northern Plains. We are also expecting some thunderstorms and rain to develop over the Southern Plains with some severe weather possible. Day six the parent low will move into the Great Lakes bringing rain and snow to the region. A new low will begin to develop along the Gulf Coast with a strong and cold high pressure back over Texas setting the stage for possible severe weather. The period will finish with the low pressure finally pushing into the East Coast bringing rain to the region, while an upper level trough will push through the Northern Plains bringing another round of snowfall to the Northern Plains. High pressure will build in over the Rockies.

Day 8-12: The period will start with high pressure over the Plains and the upper level cold trough moving through the Midwest and Ohio River Valley. There could be some rain and snow associated with the trough. High pressure will be out West. Day nine a low pressure will be over Maine, while high pressure builds into the Ohio River Valley extending southward towards the Gulf Coast, and another area of high pressure pushes onshore over the West Coast. Day ten brings the upper level low over the Mid-Atlantic region with some showers possible. High pressure will build in over the Great Lakes and another clipper system will move through Canada. The gradient over the Plains will be strong and we could be looking at very strong winds from Texas to Minnesota. By day eleven the storm system will push towards the Great Lakes and a cold front will extend southward into Texas. This could be the site of the next severe weather outbreak. The period ends with a storm system moving through the Plains region bringing rain and some severe weather to the area.

Long Range Outlook: The long range will start with a storm system moving through the Ohio River Valley extending back towards Missouri with showers and thunderstorms along this boundary. The period will finish with two more storm systems moving across the Plains and into the Great Lakes.

Thursday: Partly cloudy and mild with a high near 79F. Winds will be from the northeast 10-15mph as overnight lows fall to around 73F.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with periods of afternoon showers. High temps will be around 78F and overnight lows will fall to around 73F. Winds will be from the east 10-15mph and total precipitation will be around 0.05 inches.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with periods of showers. High temps will be around 78F and overnight lows will fall to around 73F. Winds will be from the southeast 2-7mph and total precipitation will be around 0.03 inches.

Sunday: Partly cloudy with a high near 78F. Winds will be from the southwest 5-10mph as overnight lows fall to around 70F.

Monday: Mostly cloudy with periods of heavy rain. High temps will be around 76F and lows will be near 70F. The winds will be from the northeast 2-7mph as total rainfall will be around 0.4 inches.

Question: What is an Easterly wave?

Answer: Great Question today!. An easterly wave has to do with the tropics. For this answer we will look at an area of convection that leaves the African coast and pushes out into the Atlantic Ocean. This area is defined as an easterly wave because it moves from east to west in the tropical region. Now, if this waves gets stronger, it can turn into a tropical system such as tropical storm or hurricane. Easterly waves are well known for their amounts of rainfall and stronger winds.

Green Energy Weather Report for April 18, 2013:

Wave Energy: The Northeast will have around 69mwh, while the Mid-Atlantic will see about 89mwh. The Southeast will be around 222mwh, while the Gulf Coast will be around 244mwh. The Southwest will have a range of around 197mwh and the Northwest will be around 964mwh.

Solar Energy: The East and West Coasts will be today’s best locations for solar energy.

Wind Energy: The strongest winds will be found across the eastern slopes of the Rockies extending into the Plains behind the cold front.

Hydro-Energy: A massive area of short term energy will exist from Illinois southward to the Gulf Coast and back over the Southern Plains. A large area of long term energy will be found from Colorado into the Northern Plains and extending into the Western Great Lakes region.

April 18 Weather and Your Wallet (Watertown SD):

Cloudy skies, heavy snow and strong winds will make for a very rough day across the region.

Dining: There will be impacts all day for any dining out events. Expect heavy, blowing snow and very cold temps.

Transportation: The snowfall and the winds today will make traveling almost impossible at times due to the blowing and drifting snow on the roads. Best to stay home today.

Shopping: A nice day to just stay home and wait for spring shopping and buying your garden supplies.

Electricity: There will be two impacts today. The first being the potential for lost power due to the heavy snow building up on the lines. The second will be the high demand for heating today and tonight with a forecast of 40.5HDD’s for the area.

Yard Work: If you have plans to remove snow from the driveway make sure to give yourself plenty of time as the snow will be heavy and wet making it harder on your backs and snow plows.

Construction: Today is a good day to just take off if you are working in the construction field.

Outdoor Venues: The heavy snow and blowing winds will make all outdoor activities very dangerous and best to be rescheduled for another day.
