Batman: Arkham Origins Trailer Breakdown

May 23, 13 Batman: Arkham Origins Trailer Breakdown

No amount of willpower could hold in my squeals of joy after watching the new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer. I can only hope that you understand my feelings after this breakdown of the trailer.

The video opens with a shot of the nighttime skyline of Gotham City and pans down into an alley where three thugs get out of a van with some stolen material. The thugs make their way into a warehouse, where the lights go out. One of the guys leaves to check the breaker, and his head is bashed into the breaker by a shadowy figure. A second one goes to see what happened and suddenly Batman breaks out from the wooden floor and pulls him down. The third thug sprays into the hole, only to be quickly disarmed and knocked out from behind by the Bat.

With the thugs dispatched, Batman examines the container that was stolen. He opens it, only to find a bomb set to explode in four seconds. He barely gets out of the explosion and gets blown through the wall out into the snow. Atop the shipping crates stands Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, who challenges Batman, quickly taking off into a sprint down the crates. Batman chases after him with Batarangs and his grappling hook. After demonstrating some sweet acrobatics, Deathstroke pulls out a staff and beats the Bat down onto a crate.

Batman and Deathstroke engage in an intense hand-to-hand combat sequence, with neither one gaining the advantage. That is, until a bullet breaks Deathstroke’s blade. The camera pans, tracing the bullet’s path to Deadshot, another bounty hunter. Batman and Deathstroke continue their duel, only to be interrupted again by Deadshot, who shoots the chain holding a crate above them. The crate falls, and the screen fades to black.

The next scene shows an exchange between Deathstroke and another villain, revealed to be Black Mask. Deathstroke reveals that several other assassins have been appointed to take out the Batman, and that he’s sick of the others getting in the way. Black Mask reminds Deathstroke that he’s already had a chance at Wayne’s head, and that there are other assassins around. One of the surviving thugs begs for mercy and Black Mask’s feet. Mask picks up a smoldering wooden plank and swings. Cut to black.

The trailer ends with a shot of Batman standing atop a snowy roof of a building as the main overture plays. The shot fades into the logo, Batman: Arkham Origins.

The trailer features a beautifully pre-rendered CGI sequence, similar to the trailers of Arkham City, as well as a sneak peek at some of the villains that are going to have a role in Arkham Origins.

This title will serve as a prequel to Arkham Asylum and City, highlighting the days of a younger, less experienced Batman. Publishers, producers, and developers Warner Bros. describe this Batman to be more vicious and predatory than the older, brazen Wayne of the other Arkham titles. This can be seen by the way he takes down the thugs in the trailer.

Roger Craig Smith, voice of Ezio from Assassin’s Creed and Sonic the Hedgehog, will give Batman his voice this time around, and Troy Baker, voice actor for Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite, will provide the voice for The Joker. Many villains such as a younger Bane and Anarchy will appear in Arkham Origins.

Batman: Arkham Origins is set to release on October 25, 2013. It is available for pre-order now with a bonus challenge pack where you can play as Deathstroke.
