If you are like me at all, you moisturize religiously. I put on lotion constantly throughout the day after showering, washing dishes, folding clothes or even reading a book with rough pages. I can’t stand the dry feeling on my hands, and this only gets worse during the cold months. So I have decided to put together some advice for avoiding dry skin in the winter.

1) Moisturize

Now this may seem like a no-brainer, however, this needs to become a part of your daily routine. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it requires a lot to keep it healthy. I lather on the lotion after every single shower all over my body, paying special attention to the trouble areas: feet, hands, knees and elbows. I personally prefer a moisturizer or lotion that takes a while to soak in such as Vaseline. This allows your skin to absorb the moisture slowly throughout the day, rather than all at once.

2) Exfoliate

Exfoliation is good for your skin all throughout the year, because it helps remove dead skin cells from the surface. As such, it can be especially useful in removing dry, dead skin. I moisturize my face every day, but one day I missed a spot on my cheek. Unfortunately, on that day I also had to play tennis outside in 40-degree weather with 20 mph winds. The one spot I missed turned into a red, irritated, flaky patch of skin on my cheek. The only solution was to exfoliate. Within a few days after exfoliation the dead dry skin was gone and I had a refreshed, healthy cheek again.

3) Cover Up

Be sure that whenever you brave the winter tundra that you are wearing the proper attire. Gloves are especially important in ensure that you don’t get dry, itchy, cracking hands. Nobody wants to hold hands with that.

4) Use a humidifier

Another reason that skin gets so dry in the winter is due to lack of humidity. Whenever the heater is on, it sucks all of the moisture right out of the air. This is also the same reason why people get chapped lips more often in the winter. In order to avoid this you can use a humidifier in your home to pump some of that much needed moisture back into the air. Another more simple option could be to just cook a lot with boiling water and keep that washer and dryer going. These activities will not only add moisture to the air, but they will also heat up the house as an extra bonus.

6) Shorten the shower

Most people love to step in the shower after a long day at work, turn up the water temperature and relax for a good half hour. This, however, is absolutely detrimental to your skin in the winter time. The hot water washes away natural oils on the skins surface that trap in moisture, therefore making you more vulnerable to irritable dryness. So next time you get in the shower, take a shorter shower, turn down the temperature or both. This will help keep some of those natural barriers up.

If you follow these steps you are on your way to some smooth sailing (literally) skin for the winter season.
