Changeling: The Lost is another of the newer World of Darkness games, and I only say “newer” in as much to differentiate it from the old World of Darkness. Changeling: The Lost is a game in which the player characters take on the role of changelings and delve into the dark fantasy of fairy tales. That is right, fairy tales. Tales of the fae. The sheele and unsheele of ancient myth. A counterpart to the old World of Darkness‘s Changeling: The Dreaming, Changeling: The Lost sticks very close to the standard theme of most new World of Darkness games in that you were at one time an ordinary person who was taken and changed into something more or less than human – more on that in the look at the Fluff of the game.

Mechanically, Changeling: The Lost works like its cousin games Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken, and Mage: The Awakening. Using the rules found in the core World of Darkness book, the Storyteller system, you create a purely mortal character. Once that is done, you go about changing that character into one of the changed. This involves choosing your Seeming, your Kith, and your Court. Your Seeming is a broad categorization of what sort of fey-creature you were transformed into. This includes Beasts who have taken on animal-like traits, Darklings who have become almost ethereal and tenebrous in nature, Elementals who have become akin to the elements themselves, Fairest who have taken on an inhuman beauty, Ogres who have become monstrous with great physical power, and the Wizened who have been transformed into something alien. From these you select your Kith, which is a further classification of the type of Seeming you have selected.

Finally, you select which Court you belong to. Court is as much a character choice as it is a player choice, as the courts act as political factions among the Changelings. Much as it is with the fey in classical mythology, the courts are divided by the Seasons with the Court of Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring. Each court has their own ideals and beliefs, as well as their own practices and even fey magic that they are able to teach to their initiates.

The supernatural powers of Changelings are as much a role-playing element as they are a mechanical one, with many of their powers revolving around the concept of the Hedge, a mystical border that exists just outside of human perception that links our mortal world to the realm of the Fey, oaths, and dreams. Of course powers are granted to characters based on their Seeming and Court, but there is more to this game than the slightly more simplistic vampire disciplines from Requiem or the elemental spirit gifts from Forsaken.

I adore Changeling: The Lost, as to me it was the first of the new World of Darkness games to be something completely new and original when compared to the previous versions. There is very little that connects The Lost with The Dreaming aside from the basic theme of a dark fairy tale. If that might be something to your tastes, I highly recommend giving Changeling: The Lost a try.
