May seventh is the anniversary of Lamborghini and, as a tribute to this exotic sports car, the Italian car maker has named the special edition the Aventador LP720-4 50th Anniversario. The special edition was supposed to be unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but a Veneno three-off was shown instead.
The paint is a special Giallo Maggio, or May yellow, which features a glittering effect with multi-transparent layers mixed with reflective particles. The color yellow has been the most preferred color by Lamborghini customers since the car’s debut in May 1963. Aerodynamic improvements include enlarged air intakes and splitters on the front and a larger diffuser for engine compartment ventilation. The aerodynamics has been improved by 50 percent over the base Aventador model.
The interior has exceedingly fine, semi-aniline black leather that can be combined with Terra Emilia, which is a shade of brown matching the earth from the Italian region, or Giallo Quercus, a yellow to match the exterior of this super sports car. The stitching pattern is called the Q-Citura stitch, or diamond shaped, and is done particularly for this special edition.
All Lamborghini models built in 2013 will feature an emblem marking the 50th anniversary in the cockpit. This emblem is made of a carbon-fiber material that is then attached by hand by specialists.
Power comes from the same 6.5-liter V-12 as the standard Aventador, but Lambo has squeezed another 20 hp out of it it. The engine now has 720 hp and is hooked to an ISR transmission. The combination of the engine and tranny sprints it down the track 0 – 60 in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 217 mph.
Only 100 of these special anniversary editions will be produced for worldwide availability. The cost for this limited edition Italian sports car has not been released, but will be announced at a later date.
Another anniversary edition being unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2013 is the Gallardo LP 560-2 50th Anniversario. This car is painted in a shimmering white. Other anniversary editions include an Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster and a Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder.
One of the Lamborghini’s fierce competitors is the Ferrari. Using a 2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta for comparison, it is a close match up, but the Ferrari falls just a little short. This Ferrari was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It is powered by a V-12 engine delivering 740 hp and 508 pound-feet of torque. Even with the extra hp, the Ferrari is a touch slower from 0 – 60 at 3.1 seconds and can only muster a top speed of 211, six mph slower than the Aventador.
